But this year Labor Day brought the winds and the fire. Tropical Storm Lee whipped the wind in Central Texas. Drought, dry land, electricity, and maybe arson brought the rest. We evacuated on Monday night and got back to our home on Tuesday morning, against orders I might add. We didn’t have permission to come back, but I’ve never believed that a free person has to ask permission to act in their own best interests.

I know people who have lost homes - I know many more who are stunned at the rapid destruction of their property but who are thankful they still have their lives. When we left here Monday night I felt as if I would throw up, vomit up all the stress and heartache of what I knew was coming. I cannot imagine the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of those who actually did lose their homes and possessions. I will try to help in some way over the next few days to ease at least some of their burdens.

Thanks to all the new Facebook friends. This has been an experience trying to help in some way to at least get information to those who were outside the “evacuation zone” and had no way of knowing what was going on.

Labor Day. I won’t forget this one.

The Debate

Just finished watching the debate and these are first impressions, as I remember.

Santorum – Has 7 kids….I actually fast forwarded through the rest of his remarks. Every time.

Gingrich – He would make one terrific history teacher; and somebody needs to give him a job in an administration, somewhere sometime doing something harmless (Secretary of Education?).

Bachman – She sure is pretty. $2 a gallon gas….Reagan said….something. Why didn’t they ask her about submitting to her husband? That sure is a pretty airplane they’re standing under. The hair is going to get in the way.

Romney – Romneycare (“Dammit, ask me about anything else – you put one little massive government program into place and that’s all they remember you for”). He’s smooth. But he didn’t answer any questions. He left no impression of any kind.

Paul – Wow – and not a good “wow”. He starts to make sense, then he’s off like the Roadrunner cutting a u-turn and heading back the other way.

Cain – Secretary of Commerce. Love the pizza. Got some good ideas but he's blown it weeks ago not knowing anything about foreign affairs.

Huntsman – He’s pretty too. Nice tan – absolutely incapable of answering a question without invoking Reagan. OK, Maybe I missed some flash of genius but the word that came to mind is “smarmy”.

Perry – OK, maybe I’m prejudiced as I’ve been following him for the last ten years. His flaw tonight? He answered the questions directly which is never good for a politician. On the other hand he stood by what he has said about social security (It’s a Ponzi scheme); immigration (boots on the ground, secure the border then we can talk); and Karl Rove has said a lot of over the top things. And to quote Ron White - "If you kill somebody in Texas, we're gonna kill you back!"

Politics Today

Been awhile - don't know if anybody's paying attention. But a few things popped up over the last couple of days.

As a member of the Legion I've got to say that whoever wrote the Won's speech did a good job of it. It was delivered nicely. Too bad he didn't mean any of it.

The Indianapolis Muslim Congressman who thinks we want blacks to be hanging from trees is probably too uneducated to know about black slavery under Muslims. If he's not uneducated then he's a poltroon, a racist, and a disgrace. I vote for the latter.

Sarah - we love you, but your expiration date is past.

Rudy, your expiration date is so far past you've soured. You were never going to be President - you couldn't even carry the New York of the South.

Michelle Bachmann - Really? "I don't know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We've had an earthquake; we've had a hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here?' " Even if that's a joke, people died in the hurricane. It's not funny and it shows that you're really not ready for this. Not all of us conservatives are that enamored of your version of Christianity.

Perry's unelectable. I still remember standing in a hall in Boston the first time I saw Ronald Reagan speak and heard the newsies saying how he was unelectable. I guess we'll see.

Is Romney ever going to admit that single payer doesn't work?

Keeping Austin Weird

That’s the catch-phrase here in my adopted city, the “liberal bastion” of Austin. A lady told me last week that the only bad thing about Austin is that 15 minutes after leaving the city you’re back in Texas with all the conservatives. I told her that was one of the best things about it. But it’s not just politics - last week I was sitting at a stop light at Red River and 6th Street, right in the epicenter of keeping it weird when I was passed by four people on unicycles. I had about gotten used to the flocks of Segways that roll by every once in awhile, but four unicycles is still something to remark on. Kind of like the ostrich in my front yard a few years ago. Keeping it weird.

The Won stopped in Austin for a fundraiser last night. Oh sure, the El Paso trip was earlier in the day but he was preaching to Mexicans and illegals out there. Here was for grabbing money, and Austin is the only place in Texas weird enough to give him any. The rolling roadblocks to ease the motorcade through town were advertised all day so his arrival at 5 PM rush hour wouldn’t have any effect on the traffic. Hundreds of police cars blocked intersections 30 minutes before the motorcade rolled through so I had plenty of time to sit and watch what I used to take part in. I counted a bunch of Suburbans, including the latest cast of my brethren providing communications – hard to miss with that dome on top. I finally passed and it seemed a few people were excited to see it.

But. This morning I was at Jim’s, an old Austin establishment getting some breakfast at 5 AM. I’d about finished my migas when a couple of older gents came in and got their regular table and commenced the coffee drinking and problem solving. Of course I had to listen and it wasn’t hard to hear – “You know I like Obama, but I don’t see any reason that he couldn’t have met with Perry….he is the governor” – “Yeah and I don’t see any reason they haven’t released that federal money for the fires – didn’t take too long for Alabama – he had time to come and get some money here” “Yeah, I’m gonna have to think about that some”. And I heard more grousing like that today hanging around places where those things just aren’t said. After all - This is the place where “Obama is Awesome”.

Coffee Makers

Well----I wrote this one about a year ago too....I really need to catch up on what I intended to post. Oh and she WILL be responding to this one.

A couple of months ago the Significant Other Better Half Darling Wife (she HATES it when I refer to her this way and I WILL pay for it) and I were staying at a hotel and she wanted some coffee to relax after spending a little time at the casino. While brewing it up she had a brilliant idea that would eliminate all the coffee makers in all the rooms and make it much simpler for the guest to have coffee and the hotel to serve it. The idea? A central brewing facility in the basement of the hotel where fresh beans would be delivered by Juan Valdez then ground into the proper consistency and brewed in giant coffee makers. The prepared coffee would then be piped up to each room and delivered without all the hassle of putting the little bag in the filter container and pouring water into the spout on top.

I asked a couple of questions……

How much will this cost? “I don’t know but we’ll figure that out later, but I’ll bet I could do it for $11 million”.

What’s the benefit to the hotel? “Well, there may not be one, but I can have coffee right here in the room at any time I want it and it doesn’t matter what it costs!”

What happens to all the old coffee makers? “Well, throw them away of course!!!”

How do you keep it hot on the way to the room? “Well, I’ll work on that in the morning!!!”

How about the coffee maker manufacturers? “Well, who cares???? – What are you a sexist that thinks women can’t have good ideas??????? Now I’m in the most stress free thing ever – I drive limos and buses. I see everything from celebrities and business executives to people out on wine tours. I’m the guy at the airport with a black suit and your name on a card; most of the time I love it. I hear everything and officially remember nothing.
A few weeks ago a large company had their board meeting here in town. I picked up all the senior board members from their individual private jets and brought them downtown one at a time in a new sedan.

First arrival was a very well known CEO of an environmentally connected company – he advises Gore on carbon trading. I’d been warned by his staff that he tended to be forgetful about his personal bag and likely to leave it on the plane or in the car. There was a light drizzle when I arrived at the Gulfstream and the pilot handed out the bag. I greeted client as he deplaned and he said nothing He got under the umbrella and walked to the car. He didn’t say a word until “Driver, I need to go to a restroom.” I pulled around to the front of the terminal and he waited for me to get out (in the rain) and get the door and umbrella. He went inside and I moved the car under an awning and waited. He came back and we took off for downtown. The entire conversation was “Driver, how far to the hotel?” then 15 minutes later, “Driver, how much farther?” We pulled up in front and the bellman got the door; the gentleman went directly inside, saying nothing and leaving me literally holding the bag, which I turned over to the bellman. He didn’t forget it – he knew someone would take care of it.

An hour later the next arrival was an Assistant Secretary of State during the first Bush administration. I pulled up in front of the plane, still in a light drizzle and he came off with his own bag, waved away the umbrella and stuck out his hand for a shake and said “Hi, I’m John”. I responded, “Welcome Mr. Secretary, I’m John, too.” I took his bag and stowed it while he got in the car. He made two phone calls to let his staff know he had arrived, then we started talking – ‘John, how’s the economy here; John, how’s the politics here? What do you think of Hutchison running against Perry? and so on, all the way to the hotel. When we got there, he opened his door and grabbed his bag, waved off the bellman and again stuck his hand out – “John, thanks for the ride, I really enjoyed the conversation – hope to see you again tomorrow when I leave….”then turned to the bellman and spoke with him as I was leaving.

I’ve been doing this job off and on, with different companies, for about 10 years now. That day was so typical as to be commonplace. The self-described liberal “man of the people” very seldom is while the conservative business and political people always at the very least speak to the service providers as people. I saw this during my time at the White House during the Carter and Clinton administrations and I see it even more now that I’m ‘just the driver’.

A Lack of Empathy

I watched Mr Obama this morning giving what I thought was one of the worst speeches I've ever heard. And it finally hit me. The man has no empathy towards anyone who has ever been in danger or suffered any loss.
I was never in a combat zone. I was never a target. But I have had the crap scared out me many times on Air Force planes (near crash in Seoul on a C5A), in Army helicopters (nap of the earth in a Chinook in Honduras while "rebels" WERE shooting at us) and on the ground on the East German border when the Cold War was still pretty warm. I never "saw the elephant" but I stayed prepared to look for it. I am in awe of what our soldiers do every day. LT GW Bush never saw combat, but he was still a lieutenant in the United States armed forces and he strapped into the F102, a jet fighter that killed more than its share of pilots, and flew when and where he was told. He was also humbled by what the troops under his command accomplished. He understood.

Obama does not. This picture has been seen all over the internet. The President could have at least left his suit jacket on. Appearances matter to soldiers and what I see is a President trying to be casual and "cool" and a soldier who really doesn't appreciate the familiarity.
I heard him say yesterday that "I have muslim soldiers fighting in Afghanistan" and it struck a deep chord. We the people have soldiers in Afghanistan. Mr President, you are the commander in chief - you command - you do not own.

A Wrong Being Righted

The more I read, the older I get, the more I know, the more I regret voting for Richard Nixon in the first Presidential election for which I was eligible. He was in a litter by the side of the road, as so many puppies are. She brought him home unannounced and proclaimed that she could finally have a dog and he was going to be with her forever. And he was cute as puppies are – all black and fuzzy and nobody had a clue what breed. But that didn’t matter anyway. She named him BJ for “junior” after a dog she’d never known and she taught him to grab and tug the bottom of her jeans and run along beside her on her horse. But after a few months we started to notice that “cute” was turning into “strange looking” and finally after he’d gotten his full growth BJ was just plain ugly. People would stop by the house to visit and tactfully let you know that this was the strangest looking dog they’d ever seen. Now, not like the “ugly dog contest” or such, but just … well – ugly. He had black hair and red hair and stringy hair and fuzzy hair and textured red and black all mixed together all grown over his eyes. But he grew up and she grew up, turning into a young woman and moving away, and then moving closer. Apartment living would have killed BJ – he like to run through the cockleburs and roll in the horse stalls and he would not ever sit still for a bath. She pulled out the burrs and the smell finally wore off. He was a country dog. And in the last few months he either couldn’t see or hear, or he just ignored anybody he didn’t want to see. But every time she would come in he’d grab the bottom of her jeans and pull for all he had in him. And they’d roll around on the ground and play like the little kids they were when she first found him.

This morning I walked out and found BJ lying in the driveway, cold and still. And she came out behind me, took one look and knew the time had come. Tears and memories. She took his collar and I took care of the rest.

BJ is buried under the cockleburs he loved not far from a rabbit hole he haunted. I think he had a good life. He was loved and he’ll be missed. And I think that’s a pretty good epitaph for the Ugliest Dog in Bastrop County.

Miss Dixie

I read this morning that Miss Dixie had passed.

I had the honor and pleasure of meeting and driving Miss Carter a little over a year ago. She was in town for the Austin Film Festival to attend her latest, and as it turned out, her last film, starring with her husband Mr. Holbrook.

I met her at the bottom of the escalator with a discrete sign saying “DC”. I saw her immediately and she waved; a small woman in slightly baggy clothes – her traveling clothes she told me later – and said she hoped the sign was for her. I told her that of course I recognized her, and I did. She was 69 and still beautiful. We got in the car and headed into town and she told me she didn’t feel well. Too much traveling and she hated to fly, but she loved to sing so she had to travel. She asked about me and I told her some and we talked politics and show business and how they all tied together and how she really did get her head stuck in that staircase scene. (The set carpenter had to cut her out) She had opinions about our new young President and it was no secret that she was a conservative. But I’ll leave that to others. She told stories and I listened and laughed. She asked for my number and I gave her my card; she called Mr. Holbrook and told him to look for me when he arrived the next morning. And he did. But this story is about Dixie.

The next evening they went to the movie and the following morning I picked her up at her hotel. But this time I took the black stretch limo. When she came out of the hotel, the transformation was complete – dressed to the nines she looked years younger and when she saw the stretch she said, “For me????” I took her bag and said “Hey, all the big stars get the limo.” She laughed and thanked me and got in. But then she moved up to the front of that long car, right behind me so we could continue to talk. And talk we did all the way to the airport. It was a good day.

I wish the best to Mr. Holbrook and her family. She will be missed.

Roger Ebert - A Despicable Human Being

Is it his illness? It brought back some memories of my brush with a couple of heroes. One of whom was Captain Harold Fritz. I posted this comment on David's website.

When I was a young PFC in 1975 and driving a jeep for the 11th Cav S4, Captain Harold Fritz climbed in the back seat and rode with us for the trip from Fulda to Graf. The weather was cold and damp and Captain Fritz limped a little. I asked him about it and he said he had a sore ankle for a few years. He never said anything else about it, and we passed the time, two captains and a PFC – I said “Yes, sir” a lot and still remember just how nice a guy I thought this Captain was. A couple of months later I happened to be there when LTG Starry came visiting the Regiment. And I saw the damndest thing. A three-star general saluting a captain. What the hell? And somebody told me that Captain Fritz had the medal. And I went to the library and found his citation. Damn. I had spent days on end with a true hero and didn’t have a clue. I knew Captain Fritz for about two years until we both rotated our separate ways and I’ve never seen him since. But he has stayed in my mind for these 30 some years. His story is readily available on line – look him up.

A Belated Birthday

Well - yeah, I wrote this on February 1 and it sat on the hard drive. So here it is, only a month late.

Wow - 35 years. I remember exactly where I was - the delivery room at the Krankenhaus in Fulda, Germany. My first-born. Who was born three years before Elvis died but has now grown up to be an Elvis nut. Who would have thought? The funny times, the good times - your mother wondering if, since you were born in Germany we would have to teach you how to speak English instead of German. I don't think she was serious. I really don't think so. Maybe. Back to the states, growing up - playing with Peanut (you DO remember Peanut) and then growing into a beautiful young woman who still wanted to "put on a show" at Grandma's. Then the two biggest "shows" of all. I still think I'm too young for grandsons but with one 16 and other one following right behind him, I'm obviously wrong about that. And tonight after talking to you all the good times and good things just keep flooding back in my memory.

Good night - and Happy Birthday.

Catching Up

OK, for anybody watching, it's true I've had nothing to say for awhile. I thought it should be shared:

Dear Madam Speaker

Regarding your statement that Obama was “dealt a very bad hand because there was no plan in Afghanistan for years.”

I will just borrow the highly professional statement you made regarding Bush on national television in 2008 (yes, we were SO proud of you)

"You know, God bless HER, bless HER heart, Speaker of the House, a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the economy, on the war, on energy, you name the subject,"

You boobs in the house and senate still don't get it, do you? History is at our fingertips. Plans, proposals, and requests for more troops, funding, etc - ALL of that is online. Do you ever bother searching for your own name? In 2007 you were more interested in bashing Bush than actually working to bring this nation together to accomplish the missions in Iraq AND Afghanistan.

Additionally, the Bush administration gave unprecedented briefings to the Obama administration (which asked the Bush administration to keep the findings quiet)and they foolishly honored that request.

The defense spending bill was loaded with DOMESTIC costs totally unrelated to either war - because you and your sorry ilk REALLY don't get it. You play games with our troops, and our country. You run your mouths then hide in private sessions while the rest of us have to cope with the disasters YOU promote or refuse to thwart because it cuts into your social programs and payoffs.

Your childish rants and outright LIES regarding real life and death issues are a disgrace to the office, and this nation. It goes without saying that conservatives mock you - but so do centrists, moderates and independents. You open your mouth, and give voters a reason to think that women are not equipped for this job. Thanks for that. Now grow up, knock of the b.s. rhetoric and treat this position with the respect it demands.

WTF?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 250px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_S7ZCbawx_MA/Sv8lJiEl3_I/AAAAAAAAAA0/DwaH-31Mhp4/s400/hedoesitagain-thumb-410x256.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404078923562999794" />

Happy Birthday

One of the great pleasures of my life has been the daughter I “inherited” when she was just a little girl. Now, grown into a beautiful young woman, I discover her to be a friend.

Her dedication to her friends and family, her unceasing devotion to a woman who started as a patient and became much more before her untimely passing has been an inspiration to me and, I know, for many other people who watched this drama unfold over the last three years.

She has been through struggles and some hard times and those efforts have made her strong and proud. And of course the CNN head was talking about The One's Peace Prize and how his Oneness was going to fix the economy, battle for health care reform and make it possible for us all to live on milk and honey and not have nasty old jobs. A lady sitting next to me was taking in every word. And I started to notice. She was rolling her eyes, huffing and puffing like she was going to blow down the house. Every once in a while I heard her mutter - "Idiot - Fool - Damfool ideas - Idiot".

I meet a lot of people every day in this job and everyone wants to talk. I just sit and listen and I'm seeing more every day that this lady's reaction is widespread in Austin Texas. What's with all the shaved heads? Having mucked around in the woods and the desert I remember well that having no hair on your head is the best way to keep clean and not itch. But city cops? And why is it that all the shaved heads are on top of scowling, intimidation-mode faces? Seriously. Are these guys all Reservist Army Rangers who may get called up at a moments notice and don't have time to get haircuts? But I've known lots of Army Rangers who just keep a high-and-tight but don't shave it all off. Conducting a little experiment I spoke to each police officer I saw yesterday, a total of six. One had hair and he nodded and said "Good morning, sir". The other five, all shaved heads, just glared at me when I said "Good morning" and none of them said a word in reply.

Interesting....

FEDEX - A Hero

Click on the title and try to read what FEDEX did for a little girl and not get a tear. And the Expedition (of course we drive an SUV) is missing on one cylinder with a "Service Engine" light on. I think it's a coil pack. So I head to town and go to Walgreen's first, pulling into the drive through. I push the call button and a disembodied voice says, "I'LL BE RIGHT WITH YOU!!!!!" Soon the box shows up, I stick in the prescription and tell the now embodied voice through a window that I'll be back in about 20-30 minutes. She tells me she'll need 30 minutes to put the 36 pills in a bottle. So I go across the street to Advance Auto and ask them, in accordance with their ads, if they can plug in a scanner and tell me what the computer says. The counterman follows me out and plugs in - looks at his scanner and says - paraphrasing only a little - "Dude - there's something wrong with your scanner outlet - maybe a wire's broken....you can probably just pull all the wires off each coil pack until you find the dead one - but I can't help you." There are eight coil packs on this engine - all buried under all kinds of hoses, pipings, and fuel rails. I say thanks and go across another street to AutoZone, thinking maybe the Advance Auto's scanner is broken. Tattooed man asks me what I need - we follow the same procedure and he says, "Dude, you may have a fuse out.....I can't help you". I say thanks, get in the truck and call DWSO. "Can you find out which fuse controls the scanner outlet on this truck?" Computer keys click - BING is your friend - "It's the number 3 fuse, 20 amp". I reach under the dash, pull out number 3 and yup - it's blown. I go back to Advance Auto since I'm on that side of the street and tell counterman I need a 20 amp fuse. He sells me a pack of fuses (OK - spares) I plug it in and he plugs in the scanner - number four cylinder is missing - he sells me a coil pack for $49.95 and I hope that's the problem. By now an hour and 15 minutes have passed. You didn't forget Walgreen's did you?

I go back there and discover 15 people in line - a very slow moving line - but they're not directly at the pharmacy - they're all getting flu shots. About 5 minutes per person. I step around to the pickup window and ask for my prescription - and the young lady who had taken it earlier and promised 30 minutes - - - well, you know the rest. Not ready. Won't BE ready until the pharmacist finishes with the flu shots. How long? Not long....15 minutes maybe....I ask her to look at the line - it's growing - no way 15 minutes. Well sir, you'll just have to wait!!!!!

How about if you just let me have the prescription back? And she pulls out a STACK of prescriptions - at least 15-20 - none of which have been filled.

I started going to Walgreens when they opened here in town because they beat Walmart pharmacy for service. It looks like those days are over - on now to CVS - oh and "Dudes" at Advance and Autozone - I should have gone to NAPA for the coil pack.

President Bush on 9/11/09

I had a discussion a little while ago about President Bush staying home on Friday and not making public appearances. I expect he wanted, as I did, nothing to do with this so-called National Day of Service

The statement from his office said:

“We honor those who volunteer to keep us safe and extend the reach of freedom - including members of the armed forces, law enforcement officers, and intelligence and homeland security professionals. Their courage, service, and sacrifice is a fitting tribute to all those who gave their lives on September 11th, 2001. On this day, let us renew our determination to prevent evil from returning to our shores.”

The Obamabots would have made another attack on him no matter what appearance President Bush had done and no matter where he'd done it. He did his duty and he reminds me now of Neil Armstrong in his reticence. I hope it doesn't last as long as Armstrong's.

Driving the DNC

The Democrats are in town and I drove one of six motor coach loads of them to the LBJ Library last night. Mostly nice people. Mostly.

One couple - a bit older - got off the bus and turned to the left while most people were going to the right, to the door for the auditorium. About a minute later they came back and the lady asked, "So, where are we supposed to go? There's construction there..." I said, Ma'am, I believe you're supposed to go in that entrance down there for the....." and she cut me off and said, "You BELIEVE? But you don't KNOW???" I said in my nicest voice possible - "Ma'am, your staff advance person is the young lady at the end of the sidewalk; I suggest you ask her since I obviously don't know anything about this Library."

It turns out he's a very senior cog in the Illinois State Senate. One of our other drivers recognized him as having seen him on TV with "The One".

It never fails.

Health Care Grab - Borrowed from VDH

I stole this shamelessly from Victor Davis Hanson, one of my heroes and someone I want to meet:

Health Care Grab

We all know what that a good health care system can be improved by increased competition, tort reform, tax credits for catastrophic insurance plans, deregulation, etc.

But Obamacare is not really about medicine. It is rather aimed at absorbing more of the private sector—once more, to create a vast new constituency of government workers and beneficiaries, to ensure an equality of result in treatment and access, and to replace private health insurers with public bureaucrats. (I got a taste of the future of the government octopus when I went yesterday to a California DMV office, and noticed that all the state employees at the windows had on purple union T-shirts with “organize” and “solidarity” emblazoned across them.)

In other words, in the Obama mind, would you want an autonomous family practitioner, entrepreneurial, keen to adopt to patient needs and tastes, juggling 10 employees and a 2-million-dollar family practice budget, grossing $400,000 a year in profits, highly opinionated and self-reliant, using his profits once in a while to ski or buy a BMW—or have him transmogrified into a GS-something, at $100,000 a year, with government benefits, unionized, docile, and waiting to go home when his shift at the dreary government clinic ends, wearing his doctor union T-shirt to work and eager to vote in politicians who ensure him lifetime tenure, generous retirement packages, and guaranteed pay raises?

Cellphones Confiscated - Say WHAT????

From the New York Post -

August 7, 2009 --

MICHELLE Obama, like her husband, enjoys a good burger, but not as well done. The first lady brought daughters Malia and Sasha to former "Top Chef" contestant Spike Mendelsohn'sGood Stuff Eatery in DC for cheeseburgers, onion rings, fries, and milkshakes. "They got the burgers medium," says a spy. (President Obama was mildly ridiculed after ordering a burger medium-well in January.) "Three starving Secret Service guys were literally standing over the grill as Spike made the burgers, but didn't eat," our source adds. Fellow patrons had their cellphones temporarily confiscated to prevent pictures from being taken.

OK - look - I've been around. I worked with lots and lots of Secret Service agents. First off - they ALWAYS get fed. Don't worry about them. But they confiscated cell phones??? What security protocol did cellphone cameras violate?
If you're going to go out in public with the peasants Michelle, at least let the peasants take your picture! I never saw the Great Depression; I never saw World War II or Korea; and I was too young by six months for Vietnam.

But I did get to see Armstrong and Aldrin walk on the moon.

I thought that I had read about and seen enough documentaries to have a good understanding of America’s man-in-space program. Last week I picked up Rocket Men by Craig Nelson.

Nelson’s book is filled with new interviews as well as well as archival pictures and on-the-record talks with the engineers, scientists, and astronauts who were there and what happened to many of the major figures after it was all over. The focus on the first part of the book is the engineering team that put it all together and the hurdles faced with inventing all new technology, engineering disciplines, and even project management.

There’s an old joke told about an Apollo astronaut at a dinner party where everyone there is bragging about their career – the doctor is a famous heart surgeon; the inventor built a new computer chip; the chef had created a new chocolate concoction and the astronaut says, “I walked on the moon.” Conversation stops as nobody there can top that. Buzz Aldrin relates that this pretty much happened to him and caused several years of depression and alcohol dependence. After you’ve been to the moon, what else is there? I have been fortunate enough to travel and there are places I’d like to see again – if I save up the money I can travel back to Paraguay, Lisbon, London, or Istanbul. People talk about a “once in a lifetime experience” when they go to Disneyworld but they can go back. But the moon is out of reach to the men who once went there and that fact left scars.

Read it – you won’t be disappointed.

Till Death......

Words fail me.
